Indiana Fever’s Coach Fined; Caitlyn Clark Steps Up
During a recent game against the Las Vegas Aces, Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White received a technical foul and was fined for her outburst directed at the WNBA referee. Following the incident, White mentioned that Caitlyn Clark has offered to cover the fine.
The technical foul occurred with just over five minutes left in the fourth quarter, while the Fever were leading by 23 points. Clark didn’t play due to ongoing groin injuries but showed her support by cheering for White during the incident.
After the game, White commented on the situation, saying, “I think sometimes frustration just boils over. Katelyn said she got me. She just got the bonus.” This incident reflects a shift in the team culture since White became head coach and Clark entered her second year in the WNBA. The Fever are embracing a more rebellious attitude.
Earlier, the team secured a victory over the Minnesota Lynx (74-59) and claimed the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup, which led to a celebratory locker-room event filled with champagne and Vodka Seltzer. During the celebration, Fever forward Aalija Boston interacted with fans on Instagram Live, capturing the moment when Clark—despite her injury—playfully joined in.
Clark expressed her views on the WNBA’s prize structure, questioning the fairness of awards between regular season and finals champions, prompting her to suggest the commissioner, Cathy Engelbert, might need to reconsider some policies.
Meanwhile, rookie Sophie Cunningham, who quickly gained popularity after a notable altercation with players from the Connecticut Sun, reflected on the season’s challenges. “We have faced many distractions, including injuries,” she remarked, adding, “but I think these experiences will make us stronger as a team.” She feels that adversity can lead to valuable learning opportunities as they push through the rough patch.
As the Fever aim to stay focused and improve, they continue to lean on each other amidst the surrounding criticisms. The bond they’ve formed is key as they navigate through the challenges of the season.
