Caitlin Clark’sdouble-double pushes Fever by Mystics for third-straight win

INDIANAPOLIS — Kelsey Mitchell and Aaliyah Boston scored 22 points apiece, Caitlin Clark recorded her second career double-double and the Indiana Fever recorded their third straight win with an 88-81 victory over the Washington Mystics on Wednesday night.

Clark finished with 18 points, a career-high 12 rebounds, six assists and four steals for the Fever (5-10), who also committed six turnovers.

Narissa Smith added 11 points in the second half, while Erica Wheeler came off the bench with nine points.

Indiana has won five of seven and has won four straight at home for the first time since August 2015.

Arielle Atkins led the Mystics (2-12), who were without starters Brittney Sykes and Shakira Austin due to injuries, with 27 points. Carly Samuelson had 16 points and Stephanie Dolson had 14.

Trailing by nine points entering the fourth quarter, Washington opened the game with a 9-2 run and pulled within 70-68 on a three-point play by Emily Engstler with seven minutes left.

Wheeler quickly answered with a jump shot, Clark got a steal and Wheeler passed to Mitchell for a layup, then Clark drained a 3-pointer off a Wheeler assist to make it 77-68 with 5:05 left.

Wheeler’s pull-up with 3:25 to play extended the lead to 82-71. Clark made two free throws with 12 seconds left to seal the game.

Indiana never trailed, never led by more than seven points in the first half, and led 46-53 at halftime.

The Fever shot 55 percent from the field, with Smith, Mitchell and Boston all scoring in double figures and Clark adding nine points and eight rebounds.

Atkins made 15 for the Mystics and Samuelson made 13. The Mystics were 0-for-8 from 3-point range in the first quarter but made 6 in the second, ultimately hitting 11 of 34 attempts (32%).

The third quarter continued in similar fashion, but Boston made a rare 3-pointer late in the game (just their fourth of the season) to extend their lead to nine points. The Fever made 10 free throws in the first half and 11 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 68-59.
