Caitlyn Jenner Critiques WNBA’s Transgender Policy Discussions
Caitlyn Jenner voiced her thoughts on the current situation regarding transgender athletes in the WNBA during an appearance on “Fox News @ Night.” She responded to former NBA player Royce White’s satirical take on the league’s policies after he announced his intent to enter the draft. Jenner accused the WNBA of hypocrisy and urged for adherence to Title IX.
Recently, there has been some confusion about the guidelines governing transgender players within the WNBA. This uncertainty coincided with applications from former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White, both expressing interest in joining the league.
During the interview with Trace Gallagher, Jenner suggested that the conclusion to the ongoing issue is, frankly, quite straightforward. “It reveals the hypocrisy present in the WNBA,” she remarked, referencing the discussions led by league director Cathy Engelbert. Jenner added, “We’ve discussed transgender issues, but we haven’t reached a decision,” as stated by Engelbert. It really seems like it boils down to one thing: XX is in, XY is out. Simple as that.
Jenner continued, saying that the actions of Kanter and White illustrate the inconsistencies in the WNBA’s stance. “We need to safeguard women’s sports,” she emphasized. “Title IX was monumental for women’s equality, especially in athletics.”
Interestingly, Article 13 of the WNBA’s Collective Bargaining Agreement declares that “only female players are eligible to play in the WNBA.” Yet, as previously noted, the lengthy document fails to clarify what constitutes a “woman.” Terms like “transgender” and “gender identity” are noticeably absent, while numerous other terms are meticulously defined.
A representative for the WNBA mentioned that they discussed a variety of subjects, including the ongoing debates surrounding transgender athletes and the hostility some players have faced online. The league expressed a strong condemnation of any attempts to use such discussions to belittle or marginalize individuals.
