Caleb McLaughlin Reacts to ‘Conformity Gate’ Theory

Caleb McLaughlin, known for his role in Stranger Things, recently discussed the viral “conformity gate” theory that emerged after the show’s controversial finale aired on Netflix. The series concluded on December 31, 2025, almost a decade after its debut. In the last episode, Eleven, portrayed by Millie Bobby Brown, made a significant sacrifice to defeat the Upside Down. However, attentive fans started to notice subtle hints that suggested the finale might be a grand illusion set up by Vecna to soothe Eleven and her friends. Some speculated that the Duffer brothers had a secret additional episode planned as a true conclusion to the series, which fueled the online buzz of Conformity Gate.

Speaking to Hollywood Reporter, McLaughlin called the theory “ridiculous,” yet he expressed his admiration for the fans’ hopeful outlook. “I get it—people want to find a reason for a sequel, wanting more from the show,” he said. “But the show’s over, guys. It’s been ten years. We were kids, and now we’re adults; they’ve moved on.”

He pointed out that some viewers might have misunderstood the series’ core message when they thought there would be more content. “No, that’s just Mike’s imagination. Even back in season one, that’s just how he was. It’s all fiction, really.”

McLaughlin went on to defend the Duffer brothers, noting their incredible work. “They wanted to leave audiences with a sense of optimism that has always been a part of Stranger Things. If they’d ended it differently, we wouldn’t have captured the show’s essence.”

He also commented on co-star Sadie Sink’s provocative take on Eleven’s fate, pondering whether she is alive or not. “Oh, she’s gone. It’s really unfortunate. I think she evaporated,” he shared during a recent appearance on The View, despite the show’s host suggesting that her character might still be alive in spirit.

Ultimately, McLaughlin feels that his time with Stranger Things has concluded. “As an actor, I think, ‘She’s not coming back. Season five? That’s it!'” he added.
