Caleb Williams throws two interceptions as Bears’ comeback falls short

HOUSTON — CJ Stroud threw for 260 yards and a touchdown, Ka'Imi Fairbairn made four field goals and the Houston Texans beat the Chicago Bears 19-13 on Sunday night.

Fairbairn completed passes from 56, 47, 59 and 53 yards, and the Houston defense put heavy pressure on Caleb Williams for much of the game.

Stroud's 28-yard scoring pass to Nico Collins gave Houston a 10-3 lead early in the second quarter, and the Texans led 16-10 at halftime.

Houston (2-0) struggled to move the ball in the second half and managed only field goals, but its defense intercepted two shots by Williams to seal the win.

Williams, the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft, completed 23 of 37 passes for 174 yards and was sacked seven times.

Houston's Cam Akers fumbled at the Chicago 4 with about 6 1/2 minutes left in the game and the Bears (1-1) recovered it. Cairo Santos then made a 54-yard field goal with 2:51 left to make it 19-13.

The Texans couldn't get anything done on their next drive and punted with about 90 seconds left, but Williams was sacked by Danielle Hunter on second down and then an incomplete pass on fourth down allowed Houston to run out the clock.

Collins led the offense with his second straight game with over 100 yards receiving in the absence of Joe Mixon with an ankle injury. After rushing for an NFL-leading 159 yards in his Houston debut last weekend, Collins was limited to just 25 yards rushing.

Neither team scored in the second half, but Houston took a 19-10 lead early in the fourth quarter with a 53-yard field goal that came after Williams was hit while throwing a pass that was intercepted by Derek Stingley.

On Chicago's second play of the next drive, Williams escaped a sack but threw another interception, this time to Kamari Lassiter, a second-round pick out of Georgia.

The Texans took the lead on the first play of the second quarter with a TD reception by Collins after he was fouled for unsportsmanlike conduct for shoving his hand in Stevenson's face after cornerback Tyriq Stevenson had put his hand in Stevenson's face on the previous play.

The Texans extended their lead to 13-3 with a 47-yard field goal on their next drive. Stroud threw some great passes on the drive, including an 18-yard gain to Collins on the run despite being hit while throwing the pass.

A 2-yard scoring run by Khalil Herbert just before halftime cut Houston's lead to 13-10. It was the Bears' first offensive touchdown of the season after failing to score last week, and came on the back of a pass interference call on rookie Cullen Bullock that gave the Bears a first down at the 6-yard line.

A 59-yard field goal by Fairburn made the score 16-10 at halftime.
