A tsunami warning has been issued after a major earthquake struck a city in northern California.

A recent earthquake off the coast of Humboldt County was previously recorded as having a magnitude of 6.6. However, it was later updated to 7.0 by the U.S. Geological Survey.
The epicenter of the earthquake was detected 91 miles offshore, west-southwest of Ferndale in Humboldt County. The earthquake occurred at 10:44 a.m.
Following the initial earthquake, an aftershock with a magnitude of 5.8 occurred. A magnitude earthquake was felt near Cobb, Lake County, California.
A tsunami warning has been issued for the California coast. Nearly 5 million residents are currently under tsunami warnings.
Thursday's earthquake was the strongest to hit the Golden State in five years. In 2019, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake occurred in Ridgecrest, California.
