Former Democrat and California Sen. Marie Alvarado Gil has decided to leave the party and join the Republican Party, according to an announcement on Thursday.

“Since day one, I have put the interests of my constituents first. I was elected for the people, not for a political cause,” Alvarado Gil said. But, “the status quo with a Democratic supermajority in the Legislature just isn’t working for our state. After much consideration, I am announcing that I will join the Senate Republican Caucus and the California Republican Party in the fight to rebuild California.”
Alvarado Hill was elected in 2022.
The news of her party switch marks the first time a California Democrat has switched parties mid-term in her term in the past 80 years.
But regardless of the senators’ decision, California Democrats still hold a supermajority in the Senate, with 31 of the 40 seats.
Meanwhile, Alvarado Gil said:[witnessed] “The supermajority is taking California in the wrong direction,” she said, calling the current Democratic Party “unrecognizable” and adding that they “lack the will to solve the problems plaguing this state.”
Shortly after, California Senate President Pro Tempore Mike McGuire (D-Calif.) spoke out against Alvarado-Gil’s decision, arguing that he was “letting down his constituents.”
“They trusted her to represent them and she betrayed that trust,” Maguire said. “The only saving grace is that the MAGA Republicans have gained a pro-abortion, pro-LGBTQ+ rights, anti-Trump colleague. I wish her the best,” he concluded condescendingly.
The 4th District, which Alvarado Gil represents, has reportedly become much more conservative since he took office.
“I cannot support a political party that ignores the will of the people and disregards the core American values that my community stands for and believes in,” she added.
The senator has been known in recent years for his tough-on-crime and fiscally conservative views, and for working with Republicans on labor bills.
