An employee at a PHO restaurant in California stopped a thief from kidnapping a robot co-worker with $18,000 last Saturday.
Security footage inside Pho 21 in South San Jose captured the moment people entered the restaurant around 7:40 a.m., 20 minutes before it was scheduled to open.
According to the clip, the man asked to use the bathroom and disappeared around the corner.
He then double-backed out of the bathroom and tried to pick up one of the restaurant's three robot servers. He practically swayed as he struggled under the pressure of the robot, as if trying to wrap his arms around his middle and suplex it before carrying him out, the footage shows. .
One of the employees watching tried to stop him as he awkwardly carried the bot through the door.
Once outside, the man dragged the robot onto the sidewalk and hoisted it up behind his car. According to the video, he hid the robot in the trunk for all 10 seconds before other employees emerged.
They eventually gave up the robot to the man and called the police.
The robot server is valued at about $18,000, but it wasn't worth it to the thieves, said Pho 21 owner Tony Ngo. ABC 7 News. Bots require special programming. Cannot be used outside of restaurants.
No humans or robots were reported injured, according to local outlets.
