Paramount Skydance is currently engaged in significant discussions with California Attorney General Rob Bonta regarding his lawsuit aimed at blocking the company’s $81 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, as per a recent report.
Sources told the Wall Street Journal that both parties are exploring potential compromises. One idea on the table is for Paramount to manage Warner Bros. Discovery’s studios separately for a period rather than merging them immediately.
These talks follow a pronounced warning from Paramount CEO David Ellison, who hinted that he might relocate his famed studio out of California if an agreement isn’t reached.
Just the previous Thursday, Bonta expressed confidence about winning the legal fight. However, he also stated that he was “open” to negotiations, provided Paramount approached them sincerely.
“We are always willing to come to the table if it’s done in good faith. We will explore any opportunities that align with our evaluation of the case,” Bonta mentioned at an event in Manhattan.
Paramount is eager to finalize this massive deal; the Journal pointed out that starting October 1, a costly $7 million per day fee will kick in if the agreement remains unsettled. To mitigate the financial impact of delays, Paramount has requested a $1.88 billion bond from the states, a plea that Bonta has declined.
In recent months, the legal drama unfolding in California has captivated both Hollywood and Washington. The reactions from the industry have been mixed regarding the merger, and local Democrats are encouraging Bonta to find a resolution.
Last month, Bonta abruptly canceled a meeting with Paramount, accusing the studio of leaking misleading information beforehand.
However, on Tuesday, it was announced that Bonta, Paramount, and the Writers Guild of America would engage in two days of discussions aimed at reaching an agreement next month.
Local politicians, including California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, have publicly called on Bonta to settle with Paramount, highlighting the importance of retaining thousands of jobs linked to the studio in California.
Bass stated on X, “I will keep engaging with Paramount, Attorney General Bonta, and entertainment leaders to preserve jobs in LA. This industry originated here. Its workforce is here. I’m determined to do everything possible to maintain its presence.”
Previously reported by The Post, Paramount has been attempting to portray Bonta negatively, trying to distance him from other Democratic politicians in the state. The strategy aims to highlight that many Democratic leaders prefer a settlement and are anxious about the potential loss of jobs if Ellison relocates.
According to TMZ, Paramount almost announced its decision to leave Los Angeles recently but ultimately chose not to, adding pressure on city and state officials to prevent the entertainment giant from seeking opportunities elsewhere.
