California braces for ‘life-threatening’ rain storm

California is bracing for the possibility of “life-threatening” rain and flooding this weekend and early next week.

The National Weather Service (NWS) Los Angeles office predicted heavy to very heavy rain in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura and parts of Los Angeles from Sunday morning into Monday evening.

The most damaging parts of the storm, increasing the risk of thunderstorms, heavy rain and flooding damage, will occur late Sunday evening into early Monday.

The NWS predicted Friday that 3 to 6 inches of rain could fall during the storm, with 6 to 12 inches possible in mountains and foothills.

Strong wind warnings and surf advisories have been issued.

local weather station Posted Heavy rain is expected to fall when many people commute to work early next week, prompting people to warn people online to “turn around and not drown.” “Please don’t do this,” NWS Los Angeles said.

The rain comes from atmospheric rivers, or “moisture plumes” that move across parts of the Pacific Northwest.

The rain will make urban areas, roads, streams and burn scars the most vulnerable to localized flash flooding, according to the NWS. This storm system comes on the heels of Southern California experiencing record rainfall. San Diego’s mayor declared a state of emergency after rain caused destructive flash flooding that washed away vehicles and flooded homes.
