California Health Officials Warn Against Mushroom Foraging Amid Poisoning Cases
Health authorities in California have issued a warning regarding mushroom foraging following a serious outbreak in the central region of the state.
The California Poison Control System has reported at least 21 instances of amatoxin poisoning. Tragically, one adult has died, and several others, including children, are experiencing severe liver damage. Some patients may require liver transplants due to the severity of their conditions.
This particular poisoning is believed to be linked to death cap mushrooms, which are often mistaken for edible varieties. Authorities also cautioned about the dangerous angel mushroom, another toxic species found in California.
In Monterey County, individuals became ill after consuming mushrooms gathered from a local park in the San Francisco area. Symptoms can vary; they might include stomach cramps, diarrhea, nausea, and even organ failure. Unfortunately, severe liver damage is also a risk, and, in some situations, it could lead to death. The Poison Control Center emphasized that even if gastrointestinal symptoms seem to ease, serious complications can linger.
According to Erica Pan, the Director of the California Department of Public Health, “Death cap mushrooms contain a deadly toxin that can cause liver failure. They can easily be confused with safe edible mushrooms, so we strongly advise against foraging for wild mushrooms during this risky season.” California’s rainy season lasts from October to March, creating an environment where mushrooms thrive. However, the risks involved with wild mushroom consumption are significant, and they can lead to severe illness or even fatalities.
The Poison Control Center also noted that several hundred mushroom poisoning cases are reported annually, many resulting in severe symptoms or death. In 2023, about half of the approximately 4,500 reported mushroom poisonings in the U.S. involved children, who might unknowingly consume wild mushrooms while playing outside.
