California city councilman who often wears dresses lashes out against ‘predictable transphobia’ amid recall effort

Two Southern California city council members are facing a recall effort, and one believes underlying “transphobia” is part of the motivation for the recall.

Raul Ureña First elected as a city council member calexicoThe year is 2020 in California, a state with a population of approximately 40,000 located along the southern border of the United States. At the time, he was only 23 years old and dressed as a man.

Two years later, Ureña was re-elected, but rather than continue with her usual appearance, she began wearing makeup and low-cut dresses that exposed her chest hair as a sign of her transgender identity. Ureña, now 26, prefers feminine pronouns and claims he looks “ridiculously sexy” in a number of personal photos that have since been shared with the media.

Ureña’s change in gender identity coincides with a steady rise in crime and homelessness in Calexico. As a result, he and his fellow city councilman Gilberto Manzanares will face a recall on April 16th.

A statement in the voter information guide for the recall election said that both Mr. Manzanares and Mr. Ureña have “poor leadership” and that “police have become too militarized and are seeking to defund first responders.” “and voted to deny essential weapons to police.”Manzanares is also charged separately with “act in an unexpected location.”[ing] His campaign partner Raul Ureña became mayor and … acted in ways that undermined public confidence in the official transfer of power. ”

Mr. Ureña appears to have served as mayor for a while, but once his tenure as mayor ended, Mayor It is unclear how long it lasted.

Voter Guide also alleges that Ureña shared posts on social media that showed “public indecency and intoxication” while in office. The newspaper said he has failed to keep parks clean and responsive to the needs of business leaders, ignored “increasing crime and loitering downtown,” and used other officials to silence “people with different views.” accused of racism and transphobia.

And in fact, Ureña describes the recall effort against him as “proven and predictable transphobia.”

“Please do not sign this dishonest and dangerous recall,” Ureña warned voters in a statement in the voter guide.

Mr. Manzanares blamed the recall against him on his youth and dirty local politics. “It is clear that this recall, led by candidates who unsuccessfully ran for Congress, is a political attempt to overturn the overwhelming vote of the people in the 2022 election,” he said. Ta.

Ureña agrees. “It’s as simple as power,” he said in a recent interview. “We have dismantled a lot of vested interests and status quo interests that have been entrenched in this city for decades.”

But the woman who led the recall effort, 58-year-old former Calexico Mayor Maritza Hurtado, called Manzanares and Ureña “disrespectful” and “toxic.” Hurtado, who considers herself a “regular Democrat,” said, “People don’t want to come here because it’s disgusting, and we’re losing business,” she said.

“They are activists with very dark intentions,” she added.

“They are some of the biggest supporters of Black Lives Matter in Imperial County,” Hurtado continued. “Are you guys anti-police? We’re a border town. You don’t belong here.”

At this point, it is unclear whether the attempt to remove the two from public office will succeed. But if that happens, Ureña said he’ll just run again. “It’s up to the people,” he said.
