Elderly Couple Found Dead in Suspected Scam Incident
An elderly couple in California was discovered dead in their home at the Bermuda Dunes Country Club, reportedly after becoming involved in a disturbing online scam that involved someone pretending to be actor Tom Selleck, as shared by a close friend.
The couple, Donald Whitaker, 80, and his wife Karen, 79, were found with serious injuries last Friday when Riverside County deputies conducted a welfare check around noon.
So far, authorities haven’t disclosed how they were killed, and no arrests have been made in connection with the case.
According to family friend Joy Miedecke, Karen had been sending money to online scammers for several months, believing she was in contact with Selleck.
Miedecke explained that the trouble began when Karen posted a memorial for a deceased school friend on Facebook. Soon after, she received a text message from someone claiming to be the Hollywood star.
“They reached out, saying it was Tom Selleck,” Miedecke recounted. “They mentioned knowing her friend and claimed they were dating. That’s how it all started.”
Initially, Karen made small transactions using gift cards, but soon those payments increased significantly.
“She was immersed in this part of her life, and they bombarded her with emails every day; even those close to her began to take notice,” Miedecke said.
Efforts to help her were ongoing, with friends and family trying to intervene.
Apparently, Adult Protective Services paid visits to the couple’s home on multiple occasions. Additionally, Karen’s relatives took steps to cancel her credit cards and cut off her financial access, yet she still sought ways to send money.
“I had someone linked to Tom Selleck reach out to her, telling her he would never do something like this,” Miedecke noted. “But it made no difference; she wanted to believe it.”
Miedecke described Donald, affectionately called Jim, as a retired dentist who had recently done meticulous tile and glass work in their home. Karen had a background working in a dental office before they moved from Newport Beach to Bermuda Dunes Country Club nearly two decades ago.
It’s alarming to note that a significant number of older Americans fall victim to such scams, having lost billions to cyber and phone fraud. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident as a homicide.
Investigators have not yet provided information on whether there is a suspect at large or the specifics of the couple’s injuries.
