A California couple tied the knot at an Oakland hospital last week after a twist of fate landed them in a medical center.

Francisco Geronimo Lucas and Marcelina Pablo Bautista were scheduled to be married at the courthouse on Thursday, but on the big day, Lucas was unexpectedly admitted to the Wilma Chan Highland Hospital campus.

The groom was recently diagnosed with stomach cancer. According to FOX 2 San Francisco. Alameda Health System said the medical news gave a “new sense of urgency” to the couple's 20-year relationship.

Thanks to the efforts of the hospital staff, the officiant was brought to the groom's hospital room and the wedding ceremony was held safely.

“In palliative care, we do a lot of sad things and have a lot of tough conversations,” the official explained. “That's why I'm so happy to be able to participate in the wedding.”
