California Gov. Gavin Newsom suing Trump over ‘unlawful’ tariffs

California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Wednesday that he would su President Donald Trump on his drastic tariffs.

The lawsuit argues that Trump uses international emergency economic forces to impose heavy tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China, and that a 10% tariff on all imports is illegal.

The lawsuit will also argue that enacting such tariffs requires approval from Congress, Newsom’s office said.

According to Newsom, the role currently in effect will suffer billions of dollars in losses in California. It is also the fifth largest economy in the world.

“President Trump’s illegal tariffs are causing disruption to California families, businesses and our economy. It’s price hikes and threatening work,” Newsmom said in a statement. “We’re standing up for American families who can’t afford to continue the chaos.”
