Gavin Newsom Sues Fox News for $787 Million
California Governor Gavin Newsom has taken legal action against Fox News, filing a lawsuit for $787 million. The suit alleges that the network intentionally spread misinformation that harmed his reputation.
Specifically, Newsom claims that Fox News host Jesse Watters misrepresented a conversation he purportedly had with former President Donald Trump, implying that Newsom had spoken to Trump in a misleading context.
“If Fox News wants to lie to Americans on behalf of Donald Trump, they should face consequences, similar to what happened with Dominion,” Newsom remarked in a statement.
The lawsuit seeks a substantial amount, mirroring what the network had faced in previous defamation cases. However, Newsom indicated he would drop the lawsuit if Fox News issues a retraction and Watters apologizes publicly.
Newsom’s lawyer sent a letter to Fox News outlining their demands, stating, “This isn’t just about money; it’s about accountability.”
In response, Fox News labeled the lawsuit as “frivolous,” suggesting that it is merely a political maneuver by Newsom.
A spokesperson for the network said, “Newsom’s transparent propaganda stunt is frivolous and aimed at stifling free speech that criticizes him. We are prepared to defend ourselves vigorously and anticipate the case being dismissed.”
