California Governor Newsom Challenges Federal Action on Riots

California Governor Gavin Newsom has taken a firm stance against rioters, accusing them of “turning the troops against American citizens.” He has filed an emergency motion aimed at preventing President Donald Trump from deploying the National Guard and Marines to address the ongoing riots in Los Angeles, which have erupted following a series of immigration enforcement actions.

In recent days, chaotic protests and looting have overtaken multiple areas of Los Angeles. Despite the violence, Newsom described the protests as “almost non-violent,” indicating that a federal military response was unwarranted.

On Tuesday, Newsom, along with California Attorney General Rob Bonta, filed a motion in a federal court in Northern California. They are seeking a temporary restraining order to prevent Trump, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and the Department of Defense from engaging in military activities or other forms of law enforcement.

The motion claims that the Trump administration has violated both the U.S. Constitution and federal law by not consulting the governor before taking such military actions. Newsom’s office stated that this situation is not just unfair but also unconstitutional.

In the statement, Newsom’s office attributed the unrest to ICE agents, asserting that their operations had been poorly planned, designed to provoke backlash without prior notice to local law enforcement.

The situation has continued to escalate, with violent clashes reported between protesters and law enforcement personnel. The Department of Homeland Security has urged California officials to act to prevent further riots.

In response to the turmoil, Trump dispatched thousands of National Guard members to Los Angeles, later adding 700 Marines to the city in an effort to restore order.

Newsom and other Democrats have harshly criticized this military response, claiming that the protests had not warranted such federal intervention and that local authorities could manage the situation effectively. Newsom emphasized that employing military forces against American citizens undermines democratic principles.

He condemned Trump’s actions as tyrannical, stating that deploying the National Guard in this context was unprecedented and dangerous.

As the protests continued, Newsom has initiated legal action against the Trump administration for what he claims is an illegal deployment of troops without his consent. The Attorney General echoed these sentiments, describing the president’s actions as not only immoral but also illegal.

Trump, for his part, has indicated that he will not back down. In a recent exchange, he criticized Newsom’s handling of the unrest, suggesting that he could have managed things better. Trump characterized the rioters as “animals” and argued that they were paid instigators rather than genuine protesters.
