Authorities are demanding a reward for his killer after a grandfather was brutally murdered in front of his young granddaughter when he answered the door at his California home last fall.
Hector Asensio Sr., 57, was shot and killed at his home in the 2500 block of Glenwood Place in Southgate on September 16, 2023, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
“The victim was shot and killed after responding to the front door of his home in the 2500 block of Glenwood Place in Southgate. The victim’s adolescent granddaughter witnessed the murder,” the department said in a statement.
Asensio was holding his 10-year-old granddaughter’s hand when he heard a knock on the door. According to KABC.
Immediately after the shooting, the suspect fled the scene at a high rate of speed in a dark-colored four-door vehicle.
Lawmakers and authorities recently offered rewards totaling $30,000 for information leading to the arrest of Asensio, six months after he was arrested in the shooting.
“The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and the City of Southgate have approved rewards of $20,000 and $10,000, respectively, for a total of $30,000, for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those involved.” said the sheriff’s office.
The five members of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a motion establishing a $20,000 reward from the county.
“Hector was at home with his family when someone brutally took his life. His granddaughter watched Hector die,” Los Angeles Superintendent Janice Hahn said. said in a statement.
“We need to bring his killers to justice as soon as possible and we ask for the public’s cooperation.”
Hahn was the first superintendent to file the complaint earlier this month.
The city of Southgate also approved a $10,000 reward for the suspect’s arrest, according to the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department.
Homicide investigators are appealing for information regarding the shooting, but the motive for the killing remains unclear.
A detective told ABC7 he hopes someone will come forward so Asthenio’s family can get the justice they seek.
The family also said their loved one had no enemies and could not understand why someone would kill their relative, the paper said.
“If you saw something or were with that person, please speak up. It’s a mistake. Why did they shoot him? He just opened the door and just took him in.” said Andy Asensio, one of Hector Asensio Sr.’s sons.
