California High Speed Rail Authority CEO Arrested
The leader of the California High Speed Rail Authority was taken into custody earlier this month on allegations of domestic violence against his spouse.
Ian Chowdhury, who heads this significant state agency responsible for a major rail project, was arrested on February 4 in Folsom, northeast of Sacramento, following accusations of assaulting his partner.
Police responded to a report regarding the situation at Chowdhury’s home. An outside party initiated the call, as reported by local news.
Although Chowdhury was supposed to appear in court shortly after his arrest, his attorney mentioned that the Sacramento district attorney’s office chose not to file any charges, indicating “no further action will be taken.”
A spokesperson for the High Speed Rail Authority acknowledged the situation, stating they are aware of the issue and are looking into it but refraining from further comments.
Chowdhury has been at the forefront of a high-profile, often criticized initiative aimed at introducing high-speed rail to California. This ambitious project has faced ongoing challenges, including delays and financial hurdles, with over $15 billion spent but little progress made.
Interestingly, just a day before his arrest, Chowdhury was promoting the project as Governor Gavin Newsom marked the construction of a railhead in Kern County, asserting, “We are building the foundation for long-term success and continued momentum.”
Newsom, meanwhile, has faced scrutiny for allegedly keeping parts of this costly endeavor under wraps.
