California library closes due to rise in crime impacting patrons, staff

Libraries in California will close until further notice due to an increase in crimes threatening the safety of patrons and staff.

The Antioch Community Library in Antioch, California, announced Friday that it will be closed starting Saturday until further notice.

The Contra Costa County Library said in a press release that the reason for the closure was crime.

“Contra Costa County Libraries made this difficult decision after repeated dangerous incidents over the past few months that threatened the safety and security of our patrons and staff,” the library said on its website. .

“While closed, the library will work to implement additional safety measures to reopen as soon as possible,” the release continued. “This will take time to complete, and a reopening date has not been set. We will continue to update you on progress.”

The book drop will be closed and patrons will be asked to return books to Prewett Library, Pittsburgh Library or another Contra Costa County library. They were also told they could keep the books until the Antioch Library reopened.

Depending on the release, the library will automatically extend the book return deadline.

“This is a sad day for Antioch, especially for the underserved residents of this area,” said Antioch Mayoral Candidate Ron Bernal.

“It is unacceptable that a community center in a city of 115,000 people should have a satellite library. Antioquia deserves better,” Bernal said in a statement.
