California Delays Enforcement on Non-Citizen Driver Licenses

California has decided to postpone the enforcement action against thousands of immigrants who hold commercial driver’s licenses in the state. This decision has sparked criticism from federal officials, particularly due to recent tragic incidents involving foreign drivers.

The state’s Department of Transportation announced that they would push back the license cancellations until March, allowing federal authorities time to express and address their concerns. Approximately 17,000 noncitizens are affected by this choice.

The Trump administration, through U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, has set a deadline of January 5, warning California that failure to comply could result in the loss of $160 million in federal funds. Additionally, California officials are facing a class-action lawsuit from immigrant advocates, who claim that this enforcement disproportionately impacts truck and bus drivers.

In a public statement, Duffy remarked that California is “breaking the law” and indicated that if the deadline is missed, the federal government would take action, including cutting funding significantly. He also announced $118 million in grants aimed at addressing the presence of unqualified drivers.

The controversy began in light of several fatal accidents involving drivers without proper legal status. One prominent case involves Harijinder Singh, who reportedly drove under an illegal status and was involved in a deadly crash in Florida, having previously failed his driving test multiple times.

California’s leaders, however, have indicated plans to continue issuing licenses to non-citizens, coupled with efforts to enhance screening and security protocols. They aim to balance the need for safety with legal immigration processes.
