California prisoner who spent 13 years on the run after escaping prison camp is recaptured

An inmate who disappeared from a California prison nearly 13 years ago has been arrested in New York City, corrections officials said.

Eduardo Hernandez, who went missing from Delta Conservation Camp in Suisun in November 2011, was taken into custody without incident in New York on May 20, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR).

“Hernandez was sentenced to 13 years for the carjacking charge and faces an additional sentence for the firearms charge,” the department said in a recent statement announcing the arrest, adding that Hernandez could be extradited to California to face fugitive charges.

“Since 1977, 99 percent of people who leave adult facilities, camps, and community-based programs without authorization have been arrested,” CDCR added.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Hernandez escaped from prison in 2011 with another inmate, Jose Padilla, who remains at large.

According to the paper, both men were last seen in the early morning hours of Nov. 15, 2011, fleeing the scene wearing orange jeans and shirts that read “CDCR Prisoner.”

CDCR says on its website that the “primary mission” of Delta Conservation Camp in California’s Bay Area is to “provide incarcerated firefighters to fight fires in the Sonoma, Lake and Napa Units and Solano Counties areas.”

Hernandez’s arrest follows the detention of another inmate after he escaped from the facility in mid-May.

James Xiong, who was recently sentenced to “one year and four months in prison for possession/possession of a firearm by a felon or addict,” escaped from Delta Conservation Camp on May 13, according to the CDCR.

He was then tracked down in Monterey about two weeks later, “requiring officers to use physical force and a Taser to restrain him,” CDCR added.
