California senior’s car teeters high above construction site after driver misses warning signs

California troopers said it was “miraculous” that no one was injured when “a disoriented elderly driver entered a closed construction area.”

California Highway Patrol Fresno posted photos of the scene on its Facebook page Wednesday, saying a man ignored a caution sign and ended up falling onto a large pile of dirt. Law enforcement agencies used the opportunity to alert people to upcoming “Age Well Drive Smart” classes to discuss safe driving habits and when it's time to stop driving.

“My heart goes out to the driver,” one Facebook user wrote in response to the CHP's post. “The hardest moment is realizing I shouldn't be driving anymore.”

Fatal accident rates tend to increase significantly after age 70, peaking for drivers 85 and older, data shared by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. AARP states:

The nonprofit suggests talking to your loved one's doctor about the “sensitive issue” of driving as you age and your options if you decide to stop behind the wheel.

“Finding other ways for your loved one to get to their place of worship by using an online grocery delivery service, finding a friend or family member who will drop by, or talking to a religious leader.” As stated in the press release, it also recommends the following: Set up a carpool app on your smartphone.

As for the unidentified driver who ended up at a construction site in California, CHP says they took him to a safe location and provided assistance.

“A re-evaluation of his DMV driver's license was recommended and his vehicle was temporarily removed from his property,” the CHP Facebook page said.
