California officials will ticket drivers who park within 20 feet of a crosswalk, thanks to a law signed into law in 2023 by Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) that adds to the state's broader traffic restrictions and potential fines. I'm trying to cut it.
law, AB413says:
The bill would stop a vehicle within 20 feet of the vehicle approach side of an unmarked or marked crosswalk, or within 15 feet of a crosswalk in which a curb extension exists, as specified; Standing or parking is prohibited. The bill would authorize competent authorities to issue only citations for violations by January 1, 2025, and would not issue citations for violations unless the violation occurred in an area marked with paint or signage. The content is prohibited from being uttered.
The grace period ends on Tuesday, December 31, 2024. This means that you may be subject to fines for violations.
Local governments are authorized to determine distances other than 20 feet. Allow loading and unloading of luggage near crosswalks. Allow bicycles and motorcycles to be parked near crosswalks.
One of the traffic laws Newsom relaxed was a ban on pedestrian crossings, but the law was deemed “racist” because of claims that it was more aggressively enforced against racial minorities. Ta. Newsom signed the Freedom to Walk Act of 2022 in response to the Black Lives Matter movement.
