California Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis has decided to withdraw from the race for governor, aiming instead to run for treasurer in the upcoming election. This shift comes as the competition within the Democratic party intensifies, particularly with early voting indicating former Congresswoman Katie Porter currently in the lead.
Kounalakis’s exit helps clarify the crowded Democratic field, as polls show Porter gaining traction along with other candidates like former Fox News host Steve Hilton and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, both Republicans.
“Right now, I believe our efforts will create the most significant impact if we concentrate on California’s future,” Kounalakis stated in a press release. She emphasized her commitment to financial responsibility and strategic investments in areas such as affordable housing, clean energy, and education.
Previously seen as a strong contender in the governor’s race, Kounalakis had been positioning herself as a counter to Republican policies. However, she managed to raise only $100,000 in the first half of 2025, while Porter had an impressive $3 million within a mere three months, leading in recent polling.
Among other Democrats vying for the governor’s seat are Xavier Becerra, the former Secretary of Health and Human Services, Toni Atkins, a former state legislator, and Antonio Villaraigosa, the ex-mayor of Los Angeles.
Notably, former Vice President Kamala Harris, previously seen as a potential candidate, announced last month that she wouldn’t enter the race, despite considerable hypothetical support. Kounalakis, close to Harris, reportedly began considering a shift to the treasurer role back in March while Harris was still weighing her options.
This change by Kounalakis could potentially garner her significant backing, including from former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who appeared to indicate support in late July.
