A recent survey found that while California is seeing a lot of people wanting to move, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida and Tennessee are seeing even more interest.
ConsumerAffairs releases investigation On May 20, a report revealed that California ranked last in net migration losses as rising costs of living drive people to leave their hometowns for states with lower costs of living.
The company analysed data from 143,506 users who expressed an interest in relocating between January 2023 and March 2024, calculated the change in net migration numbers and attempted to model migration trends for 2024.
“Consumer Affairs data shows that there is a continuing migration from California to the Carolinas, Florida and Tennessee,” Jill Castellano, data editor at Consumer Affairs, told Fox News Digital on Friday.

“There are many factors contributing to this trend, but it’s certainly the ongoing high cost of living in California, particularly home and rental prices, that is a contributing factor. Addressing the state’s high cost of living and housing costs would be one way to make California more attractive to people looking to relocate,” she said.
According to the survey data, more than 17,824 people wanted to move out of California, while just over 7,000 were considering moving in, for a net loss of 10,453 people.

Bash, the founder of an Oklahoma-based venture capital firm, further explained to the researcher, “I think that all of those things are things we want: we want to have a family, we want to live a quality life, we want a great community, we want to make a difference. [Oklahoma] Win these markets.”

New York tied with California at the bottom of the ranking system, ConsumerAffairs reported. The company’s chart showed that about 6,000 people were considering leaving the state, while just over 3,800 wanted to relocate, resulting in a net migration decrease of 2,190 people.
The bottom ten states were all blue states, while the top ten were all red or purple states (including Georgia and Arizona).
North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Tennessee and Texas ranked first through fifth in net desirability for potential relocators.
