Calls for new protections following Biden’s hidden decline

Call for Monitoring President Biden’s Health

The Washington Post’s editorial board suggested on Wednesday that the Oval Office should be monitored more closely to prevent any future cover-up related to the president’s health. This renewed focus comes after disclosures in a recent book indicating a noticeable decline in former President Joe Biden’s abilities.

“It seems Biden has been struggling with the stamina and cognitive demands of his position for some time,” the editorial pointed out. They emphasized that personal loyalty shouldn’t overshadow duties to the nation, hinting at the need for legal measures to ensure transparency moving forward.

The discourse surrounding Biden’s health intensified following the release of a book by CNN’s Jake Tapper and Aquios correspondent Alex Thompson, titled “Original Sin: President Biden’s Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Poor Decision to Run Again.”

The book alleges that Biden’s close aides have been concealing his cognitive decline for several years. It was published shortly after the news broke that Biden had been diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer.

In the book, accounts reveal that Biden displayed memory issues even during his 2020 campaign. From at least 2022, he reportedly struggled to remember the names of his senior staff and occasionally appeared inconsistent. The book also notes that his team would adjust schedules according to his cognitive state.

The editorial mentioned, “It was a stroke of luck that he didn’t face a significant crisis that might have overwhelmed him. Relying on luck isn’t a smart strategy moving forward.” They raised serious questions about how voters can recognize weakness in leaders, and what steps Congress should take if the president’s cognitive abilities appear to decline.

The Post urged Congress to “monitor the president’s cognitive health and intervene as necessary.” They suggested establishing a bipartisan committee to explore how to ensure transparency regarding the president’s mental and physical health. Ideally, they proposed annual reporting of cognitive tests alongside health examinations.

Amid these discussions, Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, a former advisor to Biden, speculated that the president may have had cancer since the beginning of his term, indicating that this illness has likely not emerged recently.

This raises further questions about why Biden’s health issues went unnoticed for so long. As the discourse continues, it’s clear that there are many facets to consider regarding transparency and accountability when it comes to a leader’s health.
