Utah quarterback Cam Rising is stepping away from football, though he’ll remain involved in the sport in other ways.
On Wednesday, Rising, 25, shared via social media that he is retiring due to medical reasons, following a hand injury sustained during a game against Baylor back in September.
“Two orthopedic surgeons have advised me against playing football because of the hand injuries I incurred during that game,” Rising stated. “I plan to seek a third opinion and undergo the proposed surgery. I’ll focus on rehabilitation and everything I can to regain my health. Unfortunately, this means I’ll have to medically retire from the game I cherish.”
“Why is it that my family is always my family? I’ve always viewed my teammates as siblings. Thank you for helping me grow and for being enjoyable to be around. Thank you, Coach Ludwig, for directing me positively. It’s been a special journey.”
Although Rising won’t be on the field for Utah, he will take on the role of offensive coordinator at his high school alma mater, Newbury Park, as reported.
Before that, he was a three-year starter at California High School from 2015 to 2017 and spent his first year in college at the University of Texas.
Rising played 30 games with Utah, contributing to the team’s PAC-12 Championships in both 2021 and 2022. Unfortunately, injuries limited his participation this past season to just three games.
