Giants’ Cam Skatebo Shows Signs of Recovery
This week marked a hopeful moment for the New York Giants as running back Cam Skatebo participated in the team’s mandatory minicamp. Taking handoffs, running routes, and catching passes, Skatebo’s involvement is a positive sign as he prepares for the upcoming training camp.
Skatebo’s journey back to the field hasn’t been easy. He faced a significant injury during a game against the Eagles on October 26. That day, he suffered an open dislocation of his right ankle, leading to emergency surgery in Philadelphia. The surgery aimed to address the dislocation, a fractured tibia, and a torn deltoid ligament, effectively ending his rookie season after just ten games.
Before the injury, Skatebo had impressed fans by rushing for 410 yards and scoring five touchdowns. His energetic style, which included backflips and headbutts with fellow rookie Jackson Dart, had garnered a loyal following among Giants supporters. The team remains optimistic that he will be fully prepared for camp by the end of July.
Head coach John Harbaugh expressed satisfaction with Skatebo’s progress. “He talked to me, and the trainer mentioned he was set to play in a group. I think that’s exactly where we want him,” Harbaugh noted. He added, with a hint of humor, that he might not be able to manage a backflip on any given day.
In practice, edge rusher Abdul Carter experienced a bit of a setback after limping off the field. He was seen without his left sock and shoe following a mishap. Harbaugh later reassured that it appeared to be just a sprain, not something serious.
Adding to the excitement at practice, former Giants linebacker and NFL Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor observed alongside co-owner Chris Mara. They weren’t alone; Harry Carson, another renowned linebacker, also participated and addressed the team afterward. John Mara, who is currently battling cancer, was present, showing support for the team. General manager Joe Sean was seen with former Bills head coach Sean McDermott, reminiscing about their time in Buffalo together.
Harbaugh shared that it was beneficial having McDermott visit for a few days, noting their long-standing relationship. McDermott plans to attend practice again, lending his insights on the team’s progress.
On the field, Dart connected with rookie Malachi Fields for a deep pass, though cornerback Greg Newsome closely guarded him. There were ups and downs during practice, including an interception thrown by Dart to cornerback Paulson Adebo. Meanwhile, the day’s kicking competition saw rookie Dominique Zvada shine, hitting all eight of his attempts, while Ben Soles managed four successful kicks on eight attempts.
