Cam Ward’s initial reaction to his Titans teammate Will Levis undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery was somewhat unexpected.
When asked, he said, “I really had no response. I’m focusing on Cam Ward.” It’s, I guess, a bit surprising given the situation.
This brief remark prompted some chatter online, with users labeling Ward as “ruthless” and noting that many fans were unhappy about his apparent lack of empathy.
This short clip of Ward’s response has garnered over 1.5 million views, although he’s elaborated more in other comments—yet only a handful, less than 100,000 on another clip, have caught those insights.
“He [Levis] did the best thing for him; you can’t fault someone for doing what’s best for them. I wish him a smooth recovery,” Ward added later.
Levis had sustained a shoulder injury in week 4 last season, and although he played eight more games, the pain persisted. So, just prior to the start of training camp, he opted for surgery.
Before this decision, Ward was favored to take on a starting role, and both he and Levis were supposed to compete for that position.
In the draft, Tennessee picked Ward as their top choice this year after selecting Levis as the 33rd overall pick the previous year. Naturally, the spotlight is on the two quarterbacks, and it’s clear they’re closely linked in public perception.
Nevertheless, Ward managed to ease some of the tension in his following statements. “He helped me during OTA,” he remarked. “I learned all the installations from him. He’s a solid player, and when he’s back and healthy, he’ll have a chance to contribute.”
Levis missed all of the 2025 season and is targeting a return in 2026, but with the Titans now fully invested in Ward, it remains to be seen how much opportunity Levis will have when he comes back.
