Cameraman collapses during live broadcast in what seems to be a medical emergency

Incident During CBS Evening News Broadcast

During a live broadcast on Wednesday evening, a CBS Evening News cameraman collapsed after experiencing what appeared to be a medical emergency off-screen.

While host Tony Dokoupil was updating viewers about the U.S.-China summit from Taiwan, an alarming crash could be heard. “You’ll hear a lot about the rise of a powerful new China, but will he be okay?” he asked mid-show, breaking the silence among the visibly shocked crew.

“We’re going to take a short break. There’s a medical emergency here,” Dokoupil informed the audience. He quickly added, “I’m calling the doctor,” as the crew moved off-screen.

The broadcast then cut to CBS News chief correspondent Matt Gutman, who took over from New York City for the rest of the show.

Later, the CBS Evening News team reassured viewers that the cameraman was “okay and recovering,” with an update tweeted just eight minutes after the incident.

Dokoupil is in Taiwan for the summit because the network was unable to secure a visa for coverage in Beijing. He indicated the reasoning behind this last-minute decision at the start of the program.

“Looking at the bigger picture,” he said, “it reveals some of the crucial geopolitical issues we face today. A pressing question tonight is whether President Xi Jinping will risk conflict to assert control over Taiwan. If he chooses to invade, we could see dramatic consequences even here.”

Interestingly, a source from CBS hinted that Dokoupil’s presence in Taiwan might have been a precautionary measure.

In a related note, Secretary of State Marco Rubio nearly faced expulsion from China back in 2020 due to sanctions against him. Interestingly, the Chinese government opted for “diplomatic workarounds,” which even required them to alter the spelling of his name.

The anticipated high-stakes meeting between U.S. President Trump, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and their respective cabinet members is expected to challenge their claimed close relationship.

President Trump, accompanied by senior officials and CEOs, is set to arrive on Wednesday for two days focused on discussions around artificial intelligence, the global economy, trade, and nuclear weapons.
