Camryn Manheim Talks About Her Son and Homosexuality

Camryn Manheim recently shared her thoughts on wanting a gay son during an event on Saturday. She humorously recounted her efforts, which didn’t turn out as she had hoped.

In a video from the event, Manheim stated, “I always wanted a gay son. I did. I love that relationship between gay sons and their mothers. I wanted to be the supportive mom who would stand up for her kid. Honestly, I thought I had this all figured out. But, no, my son is straight—he’s the only straight guy in his musical theater group. When my friend Marcia Gay Harden told me her son had come out, I was jealous! A week later, I saw her receive a package filled with red thigh-high boots for her son, and I thought, ‘Is she showing off or what?’”

This raises some concerns about the impact of parental pressures in Hollywood. If it wasn’t a common expectation in the industry, Manheim wouldn’t be joking about it publicly to gain some acceptance.

Manheim was presenting an Ally for Equity Award to Harden, who has three kids, all of whom she describes as “queer.” Harden remarked, “My children teach me so much every day. My eldest is non-binary, my son is gay, and my youngest is fluid.” At that time, her kids were all around 19 to 24 years old.

Three queer children? It’s a staggering coincidence, isn’t it?

Sure, it’s perfectly normal for someone to grow up gay, and if that’s the case, then good for everyone involved. But having all three siblings identify as queer? Statistically speaking, that’s quite unusual, producing odds of about 1 in 37,000. In Hollywood, though, perhaps the chances are a bit different.

This incident coincided with Naomi Watts showcasing her son, who has mental health issues, in a rather public manner. At the same time, New York Magazine featured a mentally ill individual on the cover of their first men’s style issue.

On a personal note, my mom wished I had pursued law school. Meanwhile, it seems Manheim is disappointed in her son for not being interested in men.

It’s essential to recognize that the broader societal acceptance of same-sex marriage might have paved the way for such narratives. Some voices cautioned against the implications of this change, arguing it would lead to more troubling scenarios. Looking at the current landscape, it’s hard not to notice how normalization has even extended to parenting approaches.

Perhaps the tide is turning at last…
