Canadian furniture manufacturer Prepac is moving all production to the US following the threat of tariffs on Canadian goods from President Donald Trump.
According to Uniformer, Canada's largest private sector, PRAPAC is closure The Delta, British Columbia manufacturing plant moved all production to its North Carolina manufacturing plant, which opened in 2021.
As a result, more than 170 Canadians are losing their jobs at their British Columbia factory. Representatives from Unifor proposed that these jobs would be moved to North Carolina.
“Our union has been warning of the loss of investment and production since Trump launched an economic war with Canadian and Canadian workers,” Unifoe President Lana Payne said in a statement. “In this case, PREPAC and its stockholders use tariffs as an excuse to redirect all production to the US.
PREPAC CEO Nick Bozikis said the transition to North Carolina has brought furniture manufacturers much closer to Americans, the main consumer base.
Last week, Trump announced 50% tariffs on steel and aluminum arriving in the US market from Canada. If Canada doesn't drop very high tariffs on American dairy and produce, more tariffs will come, Trump said.
“Canada must quickly drop 250% to 390% anti-American farmers' tariffs on various US dairy products.
“…If other terrible, long-term tariffs are not removed by Canada as well, then tariffs on cars coming to the US on April 2 will increase drastically, essentially shutting down Canadian car manufacturing operations forever,” Trump wrote.
