Search for Missing Hiker Concludes with Recovery
A extensive search for a Canadian hiker, who was reported missing, ended in tragedy on Monday when officials located his body in the Twin Sisters Mountains of Washington state. Gursimran Singh, 34, from British Columbia, had not returned from a hiking trip that began in late June.
According to the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office, Singh was last heard from three days before authorities launched their search efforts on July 1. His last known location was identified as South Twin, one of the peaks in the Twin Sisters range, where he seemed to be climbing. His vehicle was discovered along Middle Fork Road following his disappearance.
The recovery mission was activated after there were reports of a potential sighting on Sunday. Search and rescue teams, alongside the Snohomish County Helicopter Rescue Team and the Bellingham Mountain Rescue Council, returned to the area on Monday morning, where they found Singh’s body.
“Regrettably, we can confirm this was a recovery operation,” the sheriff’s office stated, extending their heartfelt condolences to Singh’s family, friends, and loved ones during this challenging time.
The search initially attracted public assistance, as authorities requested help from the community. It’s quite heartbreaking to imagine the anxious days that led up to the recovery, especially for those close to him. The expansive search drew in mountain rescue teams from across Washington, who meticulously scoured the rugged terrain.
On the first day of the search, helicopters and drones assisted in combing the area, while rescuers made their way on foot. The intensity of the operation highlighted not just the physical challenges faced by search crews, but also the community’s determination to locate Singh.
In a related note, just days before Singh’s findings, another hiker, Stephen Dorsett, was retrieved from Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest in Whatcom County, illustrating the risks that hikers often encounter.
“We are sincerely grateful to everyone who generously committed their time and resources throughout this mission,” the sheriff’s office emphasized, acknowledging the collaborative effort that unfolded in challenging conditions.
