Canadian Man Suffers Severe Injuries Defending Wife From Polar Bear Attack

A man was seriously injured early Tuesday after protecting his wife from a polar bear attack in their driveway, Canadian police said.

According to law enforcement, police from the Fort Severn Indian Detachment converged on the residence after receiving a report of shots fired. Police also reported a possible bear sighting in the area.

Police said the couple went out to look for their dog around 5 a.m. when the bear attacked the wife.

According to police, the victim's wife slipped and fell to the ground while defending herself. The polar bear then inflicted “serious, but non-life-threatening” injuries on the man.

Police said a neighbor showed up with a firearm and shot the bear multiple times during the incident. The animal fled into a nearby wooded area, where it died from its gunshot wounds.

To prevent further danger, police conducted a search of the area to ensure there were no other bears in the area.
