Not quite a killer’s instinct.
A candidate for the New York state legislature, Michael Blake, faced considerable backlash after he made several social media posts expressing sympathy for Justin Fairfax following the former Virginia lieutenant governor’s tragic murder-suicide earlier this week. Blake, who is competing against Democratic Rep. Ritchie Torres in the upcoming NY-15 race, quickly removed these posts in response to the outraged reactions online.
In the now-deleted messages, Blake fondly spoke of Fairfax’s “legacy,” while asserting that “racism” hindered his rise to prominence. Fairfax, 47, fatally shot his wife in their Virginia home before taking his own life.
One Instagram user harshly criticized Fairfax’s actions, stating, “His legacy is that he murdered his wife and left his children searching for her body. That’s his legacy. That’s why women don’t feel safe.” Fairfax’s actions have overshadowed his former position in the political landscape.
In an Instagram Story, Blake acknowledged Fairfax, whose career had been tarnished by allegations of sexual misconduct prior to this tragic incident.
He wrote, “His legacy is greater than it is today. Please tell us about his life of service.” He also implored followers to discuss the impact of racism on Fairfax’s ambitions.
Fairfax had served as lieutenant governor from 2018 to 2022 and was once seen as a frontrunner to take over as governor until allegations of sexual assault emerged in 2019. Two women accused him of assault—one claimed it happened at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, while another alleged rape during her time at Duke University in 2000.
While acknowledging Fairfax’s difficult journey, Blake stated that he would keep Fairfax’s “legacy to this day” in mind.
In another contentious post, Blake reflected on the challenges Fairfax faced, saying, “Let’s not forget what he endured when he was just hours away from being sworn in as governor,” presumably referencing the assault allegations.
Blake’s comments did not sit well with many, leading one Instagram user to respond, “You’re ignoring the pain of black women with posts like this.”
Although Blake has since deleted his posts from both Instagram and X, he has not provided any explanation for their removal. As of now, Blake’s representatives have not responded to requests for comment.
