NBC political analyst Elise Jordan said Friday that voters have told her they will be tuning in to the next presidential debate to see if President Joe Biden is capable of serving another term.
CNN Democratic Rep. Jordan on Saturday finalized the rules and format for the 90-minute debate between Biden and former President Donald Trump, including muting microphones and banning a live studio audience. On “Morning Joe,” Jordan said voters in Wisconsin and Michigan, including Democrats who support Biden, are concerned about Biden’s age and will tune in to see “if he can do the job” as president. “The Biden team needs to build a narrative early on that Biden is a capable and capable leader, and he absolutely cannot be allowed to play the executive role in this debate,” Jordan said.
“I went to Wisconsin and Michigan two weeks ago for a bunch of focus groups, and all I heard from Democratic voters who support Biden was that they’re just watching and they want to see if he’s up to the task,” she added. “They may still be planning to vote for him, but they have concerns about their age. And that’s really a burden that hangs over this candidate and this campaign.”
Biden’s cognitive ability has been raised as a potential issue throughout the reelection campaign, and on Tuesday a popular hip-hop radio show saw a flurry of listeners call in to criticize the president, while Democrats also insisted he is fine.
The first caller described Biden as “Crazy Joe,” while the second said, “Democrats want to keep telling us not to believe their lying eyes, as if no one can see Joe Biden.”
“He’s 81 years old, God bless him, but that doesn’t mean you’re competent and you’re the only person who can run this country. We’re seeing what’s going on,” the caller continued. “You might say it’s not happening, but we’re seeing it. We’re experiencing it. I’m actually seeing people having to put their groceries back in the register. People are barely able to pay their electric bills right now.”
CNN’s Van Jones said Thursday that if Biden makes a mistake in the debate, the election will be over.
“To me, this is the entire election,” Jones said. “The whole world will be watching. If you’re a carbon-based life form, you’ll be watching. If you have a functioning brain stem, you’ll be watching. Because if Biden goes on the campaign trail and fails, it’s game over. If he goes on the campaign trail and his approval ratings go down a week later, there will be panic in the party.”
