The Italian island of Capri has lifted its ban on tourists after problems with the popular resort’s water supply were resolved.
The ban was announced early Saturday morning, forcing several morning ferries leaving from Naples and Sorrento to return to port.
But on Saturday evening, the island’s mayor, Paolo Falco, said the ban had been “removed” because technical issues that had prevented water from being delivered from the mainland had been resolved.
He previously said the ban was a response to a “real emergency” and that local reservoirs were “running dry”.
“The daily arrival of thousands of tourists in Capri will exacerbate the emergency,” he said.
Local residents were not subject to the ban and were allowed to collect up to 25 litres of drinking water per household from water tankers.
Located in the Bay of Naples, Capri is known for its white villas, cove-dotted coastline and luxury hotels. It is home to about 13,000 permanent residents, but attracts many day-trippers in the summer.
