Major League Baseball pitcher Kyle Gibson has revealed that his first baseball injury inspired him to become a devout Christian.
“I was born in a Christian home in Greenfield, Indiana, and much of my childhood is filled with memories of going to church,” Gibson explained.
The pitcher started his career with the Minnesota Twins and has been playing in the majors since 2013. But it’s been a long road.
After graduating from high school, Gibson was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 36th round of the 2006 MLB amateur draft. It took him seven years to break into MLB after he played in the minor leagues in places like Florida and Arizona.
However, his Christian faith has always been part of his career path.
“I don’t remember a time when I didn’t go to church. From October to March, I went to church every Sunday. From March to October, I always played baseball. It’s not that they weren’t a big part of our family, because they were. We prayed before practice. We prayed before meals. We always had family meals…always there. But baseball was always in the way. It wasn’t really in the way, but I let it get in the way because I enjoyed being Kyle Gibson, the baseball player.”
In an interview with sports spectrum, Gibson recalled the exact moment his belief solidified and why. His injury gave him time to explore how he wants to feel about himself and what his priorities are as a young man.
“When I was 15 years old, I was playing shortstop and I heard a cracking sound in my elbow. Honestly, I was devastated because I didn’t have anything else to invest my life in. He thought he would never play. “I ended up needing surgery, and that put me out of baseball for probably five or six months,” he recalled.
“It was the first summer I attended a youth retreat and had the opportunity to go to Ridge Crest, North Carolina, and really explore what faith in Jesus meant for my life for seven straight days. ”
Gibson said the summer of 2003 “drastically changed” as she realized she needed to make Jesus more of a priority in her life.
“It gave me a whole new perspective on life, and it gave me something to base my identity on in life. And I was no longer just a church-going baseball player, but a follower of Christ. And I became a believer in Jesus who plays baseball,” Gibson added.
The pitcher called it “the most amazing life-changing event ever.”
According to the website What Christians Want to Know, Gibson’s former Minnesota teammate, Brian Dozier, said he knew right away that Gibson’s “walk of faith” was important to him. Mr. Dozier praised the religious activities in which Mr. Gibson and his wife, Elizabeth, participate.
“Kyle and Elizabeth do a lot of good in the community during the season, leading people to Christ. At the final night of faith at Target Field after the ballgame, Kyle gave his testimony. , people heard his story about coming to Christ,” and his faith led him to walk with Christ. ”
“Kyle and Elizabeth, like my wife and I, go on mission trips during the off-season. Living a Christian lifestyle and helping others see Christ alive in them is what Kyle and Elizabeth love. That’s the most important thing,” Dozier added.
Gibson, 36, also noted that in the past he believed he and his wife were “put in this particular place.” [professional baseball] To do God’s work. ”
The MLB All-Star said his faith in Jesus has given him “something to stay grounded in” and something to always guide and give him direction. Gibson said it allows her to “always know why I’m here and what my purpose is.”
