‘Career criminal’ arrested in nearly 40-year-old murder of a Florida real estate broker

Authorities said a “career criminal” was arrested for a cold case murder of a Florida real estate broker almost 40 years ago.

Jeffrey Taylor, 64, was arrested for the murder of Shirley Blunt, the 49-year-old mother and owner of Blunt Realty Corporation, who was shot and killed in her office on June 13, 1986 for an attempted robbery. According to CBS News.

Taylor was arrested and arrested after fingerprints that previously failed to meet the criteria for evidence were recovered from the crime scene, North Miami Beach Police Chief Juan Piniros said.

The fingerprints were performed via an automatic fingerprint identification system during a 2023 cold case review of one of the city’s longest unsolved murders, officers said.

It came as a match with Taylor, officers said, calling him a “career criminal.”

Taylor was the trigger puller, officers now claim. He was arrested Thursday and charged with second-degree murder with a firearm.

Two retired sergeants, Pam Denham and Yvette Durden, have returned to one of the city’s longest unsolved murders, officers said.

Blunt’s family thanked the detectives at a press conference Friday afternoon “every time they made tireless efforts to solve the case.”

“It affected everyone, I was working with her at the time,” her son Ben Blunt told a press conference, the outlet reported.

“She was ahead of her time…smashing the glass ceiling and she gave money for her charity,” he said.

According to the outlet, Blunt’s husband passed away before Taylor was caught.
