Nanny Charged with Murder After Fatal Stabbing in Michigan
A 35-year-old nanny, Samantha Ray Booth, has been charged with murder and denied bail following an incident where she allegedly fatally stabbed an elderly man while caring for a child in Michigan over the weekend.
According to the Royal Oak Police, Booth was in a “manic” state when her child’s grandfather arrived for a welfare check. Reports indicate that she not only killed the 83-year-old but also attempted to attack another family member with a screwdriver before fleeing. When police finally apprehended her, she was reportedly found without clothes and with psychedelic mushrooms and marijuana.
Booth faces several charges, including first-degree murder, second-degree child abuse, and multiple counts of resisting arrest. The child abuse charge is particularly significant because the alleged murder took place in the child’s presence, as noted by the judge.
The disturbing series of events started on a Friday when the child’s mother, who was away, asked the child’s father to check on them. After receiving no updates, the mother sent the child’s uncle over. Upon his arrival, the uncle heard noises from the basement. Descending the stairs, he discovered the nanny covered in blood and her grandfather, David Ong, critically injured on the floor. Despite receiving emergency treatment, Ong was pronounced dead at the scene.
The uncle managed to grab the child, who was also located in the basement, and attempted to escape. As they fled, Booth reportedly chased them while wielding a screwdriver. They eventually found safety in a nearby house until the police arrived.
Booth subsequently dropped the screwdriver and fled the scene but was quickly apprehended by law enforcement. She had blood on her hands at the time of her arrest.
Both the child and the uncle suffered minor injuries and were evaluated at a local hospital, where they were treated and released. Remarkably, Booth had been caring for the child without any reported issues for the last two years.
Royal Oak Police Chief Michael Moore expressed condolences to Ong’s family, stating, “Our hearts go out to the victim’s family as they deal with this tragic and senseless act of violence.” He emphasized that no family should have to endure such a loss.
In a heartfelt message, Ong’s daughter Kelly shared her grief on Facebook, describing her father as a “gentle giant” who embodied kindness and love. She stated, “His loss is immeasurable,” and recalled how he was not only her hero that night but always.
