Carlos Mendoza's initial reaction after being let go by the Mets: 'I apologize'

Carlos Mendoza Released by Mets

Carlos Mendoza exited the Mets without any harsh words. After he was let go on Friday, the team found itself at the bottom of the National League East, holding a 34-47 record.

In a statement addressed to Joel Sherman from the Post, Mendoza expressed his gratitude, stating, “I want to thank Steve and Alex Cohen. They are exceptional owners who genuinely care about their employees, families, and the organization. I’m thankful for the opportunity to lead this team.”

He also acknowledged David Stearns, saying, “I appreciate him for allowing me to manage at the Major League level. Working with him was a privilege, and I value the support and trust he extended to me.”

Mendoza began his tenure before the 2024 season, navigating the team to the National League Championship Series during that magical run. Unfortunately, due to health issues, he missed the playoffs in 2025.

As the 2026 season unfolded, issues with the roster became increasingly evident, culminating in a challenging four-game series against the Cubs, which sealed Mendoza’s fate.

Andy Greene, a former Padres manager who was previously at the helm of the Mets’ minor league team, will take over on an interim basis.

Mendoza concluded his remarks by thanking all the Mets staff and players, mentioning the bonds formed and the unforgettable memories from the 2024 postseason run. “I’ll always cherish the relationships we built,” he shared.

Additionally, he expressed his appreciation to the fans: “Your support made it a privilege to wear the Mets uniform. I’m disappointed I couldn’t secure a championship for Queens.” He added that New York would always hold a special place in his heart, stating he leaves with gratitude and pride in their achievements, confident in the team’s bright future.
