Williams Confirms Driver Lineup for 2027 F1 Season
This week, Williams made a noteworthy announcement—driver Alex Albon will be back for the 2027 Formula 1 season.
But that wasn’t the only item on team principal James Bolles’ agenda ahead of the upcoming Dutch Grand Prix. On Wednesday, the team also revealed that Carlos Sainz would return next season, effectively solidifying their driver lineup. Sainz has signed a “new multi-year contract” with Williams, which reflects his confidence in the team’s revival efforts.
His return comes at a significant time, as 2027 marks the 50th anniversary of Williams. “Since Carlos joined us, his driving skills and commitment to the team have been invaluable,” Bolles said in a statement. He noted Sainz’s daily collaboration with engineers to optimize performance. “He shows remarkable leadership, and we’re eager to see him unlock more potential as we rebuild the team,” Bolles added.
Not only is Sainz’s on-track performance impressive, but his contributions off the track as well make a positive impact. According to Bolles, Sainz shares the team’s ambitions, working diligently to turn those goals into reality. With him and Albon, the team boasts a competitive lineup ready to strive for better results.
Sainz expressed his excitement about continuing with the Grove-based team. “I’m very happy to announce our ongoing journey with the Atlassian Williams F1 Team! I have faith in the team’s members, both in the factory and on the circuit, and I believe in the dedication that goes on behind the scenes,” he said. He also emphasized a commitment to help Williams rise to prominence again and looked forward to creating more memories with the team.
In addition to his contract renewal, Sainz shared his thoughts in a longer post on the team website, discussing the upcoming “challenges.” He reflected on various reasons for staying, including the sense of family within the team. “I believe in our collective talent and drive to succeed, and I think the people at Williams have what it takes to return to the top,” he noted.
He acknowledged the ongoing changes and investments that give him hope for the future, despite the team’s struggles this season. “Yes, we’ve hit a bump in the road, but we’re also well-equipped to bounce back even stronger,” he remarked.
Sainz praised the team’s supporters, mentioning how crucial their engagement is to the team’s morale. He stated, “The fans’ support is vital for a Formula 1 team. The cheering crowds and encouraging signs mean a lot—not just to me, but to everyone on the team. We take pride in representing our colors, and fan support can really uplift us after a tough day.”
He concluded by describing Williams as one big family, emphasizing that fans are at its core. They inspire the team to perform their best each day and make them proud.
Last season, Williams surprised many by finishing fifth in the constructors’ championship—Sainz’s first with the team. However, this season has seen challenges, and the team is currently ninth in the standings with just 11 points, struggling to secure finishes that matter. If they don’t score at the Dutch Grand Prix this weekend, it would mark six races without points.
