Cruise Passengers Debate Overnight Stays
A recent Facebook post from a Carnival Cruise Line brand ambassador has stirred up a conversation among cruise goers. The question on many minds is, “Should travelers remain on the ship overnight or opt for a hotel on land?” This topic was brought up by John Heald, a senior cruise director, in his post.
Heald noted, “You must inform our Guest Services team of this at least 24 hours prior to your arrival in Cabo.” He emphasized important considerations for passengers making plans to leave the ship, particularly about weather and safety. “Most importantly, we are using a bidding service to take our guests to Cabo San Lucas. Depending on weather and sea conditions, we may not be able to go on the second day because it’s not safe to operate those boats,” he explained. He cautioned, “This means your cruise is effectively over, and you’ll need to return home responsibly. I definitely don’t want that to happen to anyone,” he added.
Carnival has pointed out that those who venture off the ship independently will have added responsibilities. According to a spokesperson, for guests on Carnival-sponsored shore excursions, the ship will wait for them if their tour is delayed. However, if passengers are exploring on their own, they must return by the specified time or risk being left behind.
“Carnival requires all guests to be back at the ship at least 30 minutes before the scheduled departure,” the spokesperson stated. “If someone doesn’t check in, we’ll try to locate them. This policy is crucial for ensuring guest safety and timely operations.”
Some reports have suggested that cruise lines are extending port calls, allowing for longer excursions. However, many cruisers feel the drawbacks outweigh the perks. Booking a hotel means shelling out cash for both the cruise cabin and a second sleeping arrangement. There’s also the risk involved; as noted, travelers have to manage their time carefully for returning to the ship.
Additionally, safety is a concern that varies with each destination. Some cruise lines are advising passengers to be cautious if they plan to stay on land overnight. Discussions continue online, notably on Facebook and Reddit, where perspectives are mixed. One traveler pointedly asked, “Why would you do that when you have a perfectly good hotel room on the ship? It makes no sense.” Others, however, appreciate the opportunity to enjoy local nightlife and dining.
Ultimately, the decision to stay on the ship or venture into a hotel is personal. Some prefer the all-inclusive experience of the cruise, while others are drawn to the idea of experiencing the local scene. Whatever the choice, it seems clear that this debate has only just begun.
