Carol Alt Reflects on Her Modeling Journey and Jule Campbell’s Influence

Carol Alt reminisced about her experience modeling a G-string for Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit Issue, a moment that both excited and terrified her. She remembered the moment when SI Swimsuit editor Jules Campbell introduced the G-string: “I saw that G-string. There’s no way. My dad will kill me,” Alt told Fox News Digital. Luckily, Campbell was known for respecting her models’ comfort, offering Alt other swimsuit options that she felt more at ease with.

Interestingly, it was another iconic model, Christie Brinkley, who inspired Alt to embrace a bolder fashion choice. “When I saw Christie wearing that G-string on the beach at sunset, I thought, ‘What am I doing? I should celebrate the female body,'” Alt said, expressing how much Brinkley’s stunning look inspired her to rethink her approach to modeling.

In her new documentary, “Beyond the Gaze: The Swimsuit Issue at Jule Campbell,” Alt joins many supermodels reflecting on Campbell’s impact on the industry. Campbell, who passed away in 2022, played a pivotal role in shaping the magazine and promoting its models, even inspiring Alt to take risks in her career.

Alt shared how nervous she was meeting Campbell, saying, “I was so scared.” Yet, amidst that apprehension, Campbell recognized Alt’s potential, guiding her through the challenging world of modeling. Alt recalled the moment Campbell suggested a photoshoot in Alaska, which became a significant milestone in her career.

Throughout her journey, Campbell was a protective force for her models, often stepping in during shoots to ensure their comfort and safety. Alt appreciated Campbell’s fierce dedication to her models and the respect shown on set, contrasting her experience with reports of inappropriate behavior elsewhere in the industry.

Alt expressed that her decision to model the G-string, once a source of anxiety, ultimately launched her into the spotlight. “It gave me a little more spice in my career,” she noted, crediting her SI Swimsuit debut in 1981 as a pivotal moment. As she now walks the runway at 62, Alt remains thankful for the opportunities that followed her early work in the magazine.

The documentary “Beyond the Gaze” premiered recently, highlighting Campbell’s legacy and the ongoing conversations about women’s representation in media. Alt reflected on the mixed reactions the magazine faced over the years, noting that while there were criticisms, many women cherished the magazine for its artistic swimsuits.

In conclusion, Alt’s journey, from a hesitant newcomer to a confident supermodel, embodies the essence of celebrating femininity and strength within the fashion industry—a message she continues to champion today.
