Caroline Wozniacki advances to US Open fourth round

Caroline Wozniacki suddenly has a chance to achieve her best Grand Slam result since winning the Australian Open in 2018, her only major victory of her career.

The former world No. 1, who will return to tennis in 2023 after a three-year hiatus to start a family, reached the fourth round of the U.S. Open for the second consecutive year on Saturday, beating French qualifier Jessica Ponchet 6-3, 6-2 on Grandstand Court.

The 34-year-old Wozniacki will face the winner of Saturday night's match between 15th seed Anna Kalinskaya and 22nd seed Beatrice Haddad Mara for a spot in the quarterfinals.

Wozniacki, who has reached two U.S. Open finals although she hasn't played since 2014, retired in 2020 and used her time off to have two children with her husband, former Knicks forward David Lee.

The Danish star returned to tennis last June and thrilled the crowd at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center as a wildcard, but lost in the fourth round to eventual champion Coco Gauff last year.
