Carson Benge Awaits Mets Decision

JUPITER, Fla. — Carson Benge showcased sufficient skill this spring to potentially secure a spot with the Mets, and he’s now waiting for the final decision.

The young prospect concluded his first season in the Grapefruit League with a 1-for-3 performance in a 4-3 defeat to the Marlins at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.

With an .874 OPS over 14 games, Benge didn’t always shine on the field, though he managed to hold his own.

“I’m glad I was able to represent myself well,” the 23-year-old outfielder mentioned. “I think I showed what kind of person I am. That felt important to me.”

The absence of Mike Tauchman—who is undergoing surgery for a torn meniscus in his left knee—could work in Benge’s favor. Still, there’s also the chance the Mets might part ways with Tauchman and Benge.

Meanwhile, Tyron Taylor and Brett Batty are potential candidates for the right field position, with Jared Young in the mix too. However, there’s a possibility that Benge could be deemed ready for the starting role.

The Mets will be wrapping up spring training soon, but Benge might not learn of his fate until just before Thursday’s season opener.

Currently, he’s not on the 40-man roster. “I’ll be patient,” Benge expressed. “I’ve waited this long, so a little more time is fine.”

When asked about his key takeaway from camp, Benge said, “That’s exactly the level they play. Day in and day out, they work hard. They take everything seriously—from preparation to hydration to how they handle things on and off the field. I really picked up on that.”

Nolan McLean and Sean Manaea are scheduled to pitch during Monday’s Red and White scrimmage. This will be McLean’s last tune-up before his start against the Pirates on Sunday, while Manaea is set to begin the season in a bullpen role, so his first appearance remains uncertain.

In addition, Clay Holmes and Kodai Chiga will pitch in minor league games this week before heading north.

David Peterson wrapped up Grapefruit League play with a 4.15 ERA, allowing five hits and one earned run in five innings against the Marlins. He is slated to face the Pirates at Citi Field on Saturday.
