A group searching for mass graves across Mexico has announced the discovery of a secret cartel crematorium in Mexico City. The findings were made in an area often touted by political elites as shining examples of effective policing.
On Tuesday night, Cecilia Flores, leader of the group Madres Buscadoras de Sonora (Searching for Sonora’s Mothers), said her group had discovered a secret crematorium and suspected murder scene in Mexico City’s Ixtapalapa neighborhood. They announced that they had found the location. In her social media post, she claimed that Flores had found several items belonging to the woman and child.

However, despite identification efforts, the large number of remains meant that many victims remained unidentified. In Mexico, various groups searching for mothers have attracted a lot of attention in recent years. This is because they claim they are not seeking justice, but simply want to find their missing loved ones, or at least find answers about their fate.

The discovery of the crematorium comes amid unprecedented levels of violence in Mexico and as government officials continue to insist the country is safe and violence is decreasing. The Mexico City Attorney General’s Office announced Tuesday night that it would investigate the incident.
