Violence Erupts in Mexico Following Cartel Leader’s Death

An uprising among cartel members ignited chaos in Mexico after a strike aimed at killing “El Mencho,” the head of the Jalisco New Generation cartel. This unrest impacted a number of popular tourist areas on Sunday.

Due to the ongoing violence, the U.S. State Department has advised citizens to shelter in place, and several airlines have suspended flights amid heightened concerns.

In the midst of this turmoil, TripAdvisor has revealed its 2026 Travelers’ Choice Awards for the best beaches, featuring the top picks in Mexico.

Isla Pasion Beach Takes the Top Spot

Isla Pasion Beach in Cozumel secured the top ranking as the best beach after reviews from millions of travelers were analyzed last year. This announcement was made on February 17th.

The beach is praised for being a private island haven with crystal-clear waters, opportunities for snorkeling, and experiences with marine life.

According to travel advice, the ideal time to visit the island is from November to April, thanks in part to its protected coral reefs and sea turtle nesting sites, making it appealing for day trips.

“U.S. citizens in many locations in Mexico are being asked to shelter in place.”

Alongside Isla Pasion, other top beaches include Elafonissi Beach in Greece, Baros Lagoon in Kissamos, and Eagle Beach in Aruba.

Warnings for Tourists

Amid the disruptions, Isla Pasion is marked as part of an “ongoing security operation” in travel alerts issued by the U.S. State Department on Sunday, reiterating the call for citizens to seek shelter.

The State Department’s advisory classifies the current situation in Mexico as a “Level 2 – Enhanced Alert.” Comparatively, other regions hold a “Level 3 – Reconsider Travel” and “Level 4 – Do Not Travel” rating.

This travel warning indicates risks associated with terrorism, crime, and kidnappings. It enumerates serious threats including murder, robbery, and violent incidents.

“There’s a significant risk of violence from various groups, including terrorist organizations and cartels,” the advisory remarks, noting that innocent bystanders have often become victims in violent confrontations.

Brady Alumbaugh, a travel advisor, advised those visiting Mexico to remain vigilant and follow their instincts regarding their surroundings. She suggested that traveling in groups can enhance safety.

Alumbaugh also recommended registering for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), which allows the State Department to reach out in emergencies and keeps track of U.S. nationals abroad.

Lastly, she emphasized the importance of staying connected; if a traveler’s phone plan lacks coverage in Mexico, a day pass E-SIM could help maintain contact with authorities and loved ones, even without Wi-Fi. Emergency numbers in Mexico differ from those in the U.S.—specifically, 065 for ambulances, 068 for fire services, and 060 for police assistance.
