Casey Schmitt leads the Giants to a win against the Marlins

Giants Secure Victory with Schmidt’s Key Hit

SAN FRANCISCO — With a powerful swing, Casey Schmidt turned the tide for the Giants. After struggling in the previous two games, including one early Saturday that saw him get out, Schmidt quickly made the large crowd of 38,589 at Oracle Park forget that misstep.

When he stepped up to bat in the sixth inning against the Marlins, the game was tied. Earlier, Schmidt had made a base-running error that seemed significant. But, as fate would have it, he sent a rocket into the left field seats, hitting a two-run home run that ultimately contributed to the Giants’ 6-2 win.

Robbie Ray pitched a solid five innings despite walking three batters and dealing with base traffic for most of the innings, except one. He threw only 74 pitches after three innings but did enough to earn the win.

What It Means

This victory marked Ray’s sixth start this season and helped him bounce back from his previous out. Now, he has improved his record to 3 wins, 2 losses, and a 2.30 ERA. This was also the Giants’ first home win over the Marlins since August 2024, ending a six-game home losing streak against this opponent.

Who Is Hot

Even though Schmidt started the season on the bench, he’s emerged as one of the Giants’ top hitters. After a bit of a slump, marking just four home runs in 21 games, his third homer of the season elevated his OPS to .854—making him the leader among regular players for San Francisco.

Close behind is Jung Hoo Lee, who reached base three times, including a double, increasing his OPS to .773. He hit a solo homer in his last at-bat the night before and is currently batting .404 for his last four games, amassing seven extra-base hits.

The lower part of the lineup showed strong performance as well, with players like Drew Gilbert and Heriot Ramos hitting solo home runs. In the series’ first two games, the Giants’ five to nine batters have combined for 15 hits and eight RBIs, showcasing a .429 batting average, while the top four have managed just seven hits with two RBIs for a .200 average.

Who Is Not?

Despite his successes at the plate, Schmidt has also made two notable base-running errors recently. For instance, he should have helped the Giants take a 1-0 lead after Lee’s double in the second inning, but instead, he got thrown out trying to reach second base.

He stumbled while rounding second and failed to get back in time against Kyle Stowers’ throw, even showing visible frustration by slamming the ground. This mistake mirrored Lee’s earlier slip when he was called out for overrunning second base.

To the Next

The Giants will look to secure their third consecutive win in Sunday’s game. RHP Landen Loop, with a 4-1 record and a 2.28 ERA, is set to face RHP Max Meyer, who has a 1-0 record and a 3.96 ERA.
